There have been a few times when I have just had a random idea pop into my head like the time I decided to have a wedding for my dog, so it’s not uncommon for my friends to get a phone call to help me follow thru on these ideas.  I usually try and do two or three shoots per year just for me.  It gives me a chance to try new things without the pressure of having to get it right for the client.  I can also be more adventurous in posing and composition or try new techniques that I have learned.  I love the creative freedom that I get to have when I pick the type of shoot, the models, the make-up and the wardrobe.  Having complete creative control comes in handy because I can match the style of shoot to the vision that I have for that shoot.

Back in January I attended a formal dinner for my sorority’s Centennial celebration and I purchased a Fuchsia gown (my favorite color!) to wear.  Since that night, the gown has been just hanging in my closet.  One night one the face of one of the make-up artists that I work with on occasion popped into my head when I thought about doing a non-traditional bridal-type of shoot.  When I contacted her about it, she told me that she was awkward in front of the camera, but I knew I needed her face!  When someone tells me they are awkward, they usually aren’t as bad as they think.  I think we all just have a tendency of being hard ourselves sometimes, so I love bringing out my clients’ inner beauty to match what I see through my eyes.  Sometimes my clients are naturals in front of the camera and other times they just need to warm up a little.  Even the most reluctant person in the group is usually enjoying the shoot about halfway through and I love when that transition happens!  Ericka agreed to do the shoot but we hadn’t set a date because I was busy trying to wrap up clients for the end of the year and the weather has been crazy!  This past Saturday I didn’t have a shoot scheduled and the weather was going to be nice so it was like music to my ears when Ericka contacted me and asked about the shoot and said that she was available.  I showed her the dress, let her have creative freedom with her hair and make-up, and decided on a location.  When I met up with Ericka I was so excited because she nailed her look!  I love when I can explain a concept of a shoot to someone that I have a working relationship with and they get it!   Ericka is a Virginia-based make-up artist, but she covers Virginia, D.C. and parts of Maryland, so if you are looking for a make-up artist for your photos, wedding or a nice evening out, please contact her! With that, here are some of my favorite images from our shoot!
