How I Found Photography {Virginia Wedding Photographer}

I am often asked, “How did you get into photography?”  Well, I grew up with a photographer as a dad, so I think it just became natural that I would end up with a camera in my hand.  I remember  posing for a picture once when I was younger.  I was about to go to bed and I had on my nightgown and my favorite stuffed elephant.  Dad had his camera, black backdrop, and dark room.  I didn’t know much about photography, but I knew to NEVER open the door to his darkroom when he was processing film!! I learned this the hard way, so I would go in there when he wasn’t home to see what the big deal was.  I would see black and white 8x10s of the models that came over for headshots as the smell of the chemicals lingered in the room, but I never understood the process until he let me hang out in there one evening as he processed his film.

At a young age, I was the kid in the neighborhood with my little 110 camera taking photos of my friends and sending the film off to Seattle FilmWorks because they had the cheapest processing fees.  Yep, I sent my rolls of film all the way to Seattle instead of just going to the 1-hour lab at the drug store!  Dad wasn’t able to process the speed of film that my little camera held.

While I’ve spent time in front of the camera (acting and modeling), my love of all things creative keeps me behind the camera!  Towards the end of grad school I bought my first DSLR and begin to really learn the ins and outs of the camera and lighting.  My first trip out with my new camera was with my dad to one of the Botanical Garden in Greensboro, NC.  After a bout with my allergies, I knew I would never be a nature photographer!  However, we spotted an older couple and something about their love, while just relaxing in a park, appealed to me.  I snapped a few photos of them and my desire to capture love has led to me weddings, engagements, a lifestyle photography.

While  I am thankful for the host of friends and family that believe in me, I find myself calling my dad to have him critique my work and explain ways that I could improve.  As I become a better photographer, I find him complimenting my work more and more.  So, I think if you have one person that believes in you, that’s all you need!
