The Workshop Experience with Katelyn James

I’ve mentioned this before, but one of the goals that I’ve had for 2013 is to learn from leaders in the photography industry.  I want to become better and I’ve read books, I’ve watched videos and Creative Live seminars and attended my first conference (Blink! Conference).  Early this Summer I completed a coaching session with Katelyn James and it was so extremely valuable.  I was able to talk specifically about where I am in my business and what I can do better. I have so many things that I am still trying to implement, but when Katelyn announced another 2-day workshop for 2013, I said what the heck and went to the registration page.  I figured it would be sold out before I had a chance to register, but I took  a chance anyway.  My registration went through and I was like “whoa, did I just do that?”, yes, I did.  Fast forward to the workshop and I have to admit it was 2-days of awesomeness.  I have a notebook full of information that I am trying to combine with my coaching session to implement what I think will work for me in 2014.  What I realize in all of this is that I am not a jack of all trades photographer.  I realize that shooting babies is not my strongest area, so because of what I learned in the workshop and what I learned about myself I have decided not to offer Newborn sessions in 2014 and refer them to my photographer friends that are amazing at that!

So, here’s more about the workshop in case you were wondering.  Katelyn covers all aspects of business from branding, social media, editing, pricing, to insurance and photographer tools.  Whew!  On top of that we did a styled shoot to see how Katelyn interacts with her couples and how she shoots details of the wedding day.  We also had a mini headshot session.  I was hit with a migraine during the last few hours of day 2, so my headshot wasn’t my best, but that’s okay.  I walked away with so much that I recommend this for anyone that’s at a place in their business, whether established or just starting out, that just needs direction to propel themselves forward.

Someone asked which one I’d recommend more- the Coaching Session or the 2-Day Workshop and I can’t really say.  The coaching session, as I mentioned, was strictly a look at my business and the workshop was a deep dive into all things photography.

Here are some of the photos from the workshop:

Here are a few photos of Katelyn’s husband, Michael, and his mom, Bobbi, and of course, Bokeh.  They took care of all the behind the scenes stuff and our awesome meals!
